Let's see how the CCP will deal with the Chinese demanding their democratic rights. If Hong Kong is anything to go by, it will all end in tears.

@Ilovecruise Right, the CCP gauging its own popularity. Let me guess, you were born yesterday?

@dearcoolz Not true. Taiwan is democratic. Economically, Taiwan punches far above its weight, too. Their GDP per capita is more than three times that of China.

HAIL THRASH,GRIND,SLAM, TECHNICAL DEATH METAL I actually took purchasing power parity (PPP) into account when I wrote that Taiwan has three times the GDP per capita compared to China. The Qataris have no imperial Chinese roots, by the way.

@filipjason3553 What is it with your eternal whataboutism and you always having to draw the US into any discussion? They don't matter in this discussion.

@lepeiyan2341 I mentioned PPP already. Look it up if you don't know what it means. I understand that you're hurting because the Taiwanese enjoy a higher standard of living, but that's not even the point here. I used Taiwan as an example of how democracy and affluence aren't mutually exclusive. On the contrary, democracy is a prerequisite for continued growth, because democracy, assuming it's done right, ensures social harmony. Social turmoil isn't exactly conducive to growth.

@lepeiyan2341 I have "never considered Taiwanese to be human?" What gave rise to such a ridiculous accusation? Taiwan isn't spotless, but it's deemed less corrupt than China and by a wide margin, too. The Corruption Perception Index puts Taiwan at #28. China is at a mediocre #80.

@lepeiyan2341 No, I want you to explain why I supposedly don't consider the Taiwanese humans. I want to know what brought that on. I don't want to write you off as an uncultured troll, but I will if you don't explain yourself. Your claims about Taiwan comparing badly to China in corruption and rule of law are unfounded. In fact, respected international comparisons suggest that the reverse is true. The same goes for happiness: China scores much worse than Taiwan. The UN's World Happiness Report puts Taiwan in 25th place; China... 94th.
