Nok_Su Kao You've never heard of federations? Germany made the switch, and so did the USA. India and Pakistan, too, emerged as federations after decolonisation.

An overwhelming majority of the Commonwealth members are republics, 36 out of 56. 15 have Charles III as their king, while another 6 have monarchs of their own. The UK could easily become a republic, while Charles would stay on as the nominal head of the Commonwealth, as he is now. The only problem I foresee is the Commonwealth members balking at financing his lifestyle.

That's your problem, tradition holds you back.

Why is it that some republics get top marks for governance then? Also, half of the top 10 democracies in the world are republics, and the other half constitutional monarchies. Democratically speaking, the distinction appears irrelevant. By the way, the UK isn't among the top 10 democracies.

You're alluding to the monarchy attracting tourism. France gave its royals the chop centuries ago and still it outperforms the UK in income from tourism. Just like the UK, France has its monuments and horse guards, all paid for by taxpayers. What the French don't have is a scandal-prone royal family, whose lavish lifestyle must be funded to the tune of £100m+ a year.

@yvonnejohnston9429 No, like Iceland, Finland, Switzerland, Ireland and Taiwan. All republics and top 10 democracies. Funny that you (whataboutistically?) bring up the USA. It rates as a flawed democracy ever since Trump got elected president. Both Congos are the pits democracy-wise. Suggesting that the two are somehow representative of republics as a whole is like saying that Saudi Arabia, where the king wields absolute power, is representative of monarchies as a whole.
