@thereita1052 Independence movements wax and wane, but they never disappear altogether. Europe's borders are the result of distinct yet similar regions banding together to stand firm against their not-so-similar and formerly-not-so-friendly neighbours. There's no such need any longer, so the glue that's holding these regions together is losing its strength. Anyway, small is beautiful. Europe is rife with small countries that get top marks in governance, democracy, absence of corruption, etc.

Not true. The EU wisely steers clear of separatism in its member states. Besides, Catalonia isn't the only fault line in Europe. Belgium has existed as an entirely artificial construct for nearly two centuries. It will split eventually, but without a bang. Ironically, it's the EU that enables separatism by providing a sound framework for peaceful coexistence and continued close economic co-operation. France, Germany and Italy may go down the same road, with Euskadi, Bavaria and Padania splitting off respectively. The UK's problem with regard to Scotland is that there's no such framework in place. Unionist unhappiness with the NIP illustrates the problem nicely.
