To be honest, Russia was misunderstood the essence of scorched earth tactics many times over. More often than not, they destroy cities they're attacking -- not retreating from -- so as to deny themselves their use. Mariopul and Bakhmut are cases in point.

@LewisJohniom It would have to be a nuclear one. In my understanding Ukraine gave up theirs in exchange for security guarantees from Russia. Little did they know that Russia held its fingers crossed behind its back.

Nonsense, Russia has expended all the credibility it ever had, many many years ago. The funniest example was when Iran blundered and shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet. Russia jumped to defend Iran, concocting one conspiracy theory after another blaming the US... till Iran owned up. Russia wasn't even ashamed. Better luck next time, the Kremlin propagandists shrugged it off.
