Russia's naval base in Tartus is rather "key". Its naval operations in the Mediterranean are seriously curtailed without a port there for repair and replenishment.

Firstly, Russia has bombed these Sunnis for nearly a decade. Secondly, Russia is harbouring Assad, who's not exactly in the rebels' good books either.
