  2. That's what happens when you grow up in a neighborhood utterly devoid of opportunities. If joining a gang is what offers you immediate security and a sense of belonging versus spending 8 hours a day studying to get into a good college, then that is what many kids --- especially boys --- are going to do. What they need is the same opportunities to succeed as everyone else, but if their home life is a mess and the schools are underfunded, they adopt a different lifestyle than most of us middle-class suburban folks who can afford to send our children to decent schools in a safe neighborhood.
