Often having a weapon of that sort incites other people to attack you, because they feel like their lives are in immediate danger if they don't. When everyone is openly carrying, situations can easily escalate to the point of being fatal when they never would have otherwise. If you don't believe me, read Sam Harris's article "The Riddle of the Gun." Carrying some mace or a pocketknife would have been just fine, but noooo he needed the largest, most powerful military grade weapon he could find. Imagine if people like him were "protecting" themselves with nuclear weapons, would you still say that's a good idea? Dearmament is the only strategy if the human race is to survive. This isn't the Purge, but you guys sure as hell seem to want it to be.
