@Awestar I’m not a fan of France (they are, ironically, 100x more colonialist minded than every other major Western power), but it’s only 100% unwillingly if both the government and people don’t want them there. This hasn’t been the case.

lmao. This what I always say. India is one of the only former colonies who did it well. They used the infrastructure and government built for them and used it to grow rather than just collapse. HK was a jewel cause it stayed under the Brits for so long. Now all the Hong Kongers are so said they gave it up.

@djangounchained9387 Are you really bringing up Mansa Musa? lol

Belgium is the one Western country I wouldn’t want to work with based on their past colonial conduct + their lack of any real military.

@HeichE944 It’s clear he was being sarcastic.

And the only countries that are functional.

@Newbmann Not if Beyoncé has anything to say. 🤦♂️

This is why a partnership between an African country with democracy and the West = strong. Dictator led African countries partnered with the West = remain underdeveloped and exploited.

@istoppedcaring6209 I’m a historian. So, I know the history. But they never covered themselves in glory as colonialists. And now their military utility / aide is almost useless. Their support of Ukraine has been nothing other than pathetic. And the way they intentionally degrade their own military is a shame, especially since they’re the HQ of NATO. But I wouldn’t disagree most African countries would STILL be better off with being a protectorate of Belgium.

@istoppedcaring6209 Yeah, I have read about that. But thank you for the added detail. Disappointing that they haven’t been able to resolve the situation even in the current situation. I would Oryx’s very recent article to get a clear and unbiased picture of how poor and even disingenuous their efforts in support have been. Given that Belgian public support is pretty high and the government’s still resisting doing more so strongly. They refused to buy back any of the arms they had Cropley sold to private firms at the price of Scrap Metal and eventually were happy when Germany got sick of waiting and just bought the tanks, for example, themselves. And the UK M109s.

Rare earth minerals aren’t as rare the name makes it sound. But they are exponentially rarer than energy reserves and are more critical ever in manufacturing. But I agree partially with your assessment.

@ShadowPhoenixMaximus And failing to make their gambit work. They’re an absolute mess and their economy is in free fall. Add potentially trillions in infrastructure damage in the 2023 floods along with hundreds-of-thousands dead too.

The CCP will do business with countries like Eritrea where slavery is still legal without hesitation. Russia doesn’t have enough money or stability to engage Africa long term.

@carlosandleon You and who? I am not from India nor am I British. I was just using an example where the colonial legacy can be valuable. Not the marginalization aspect, but in terms of what they inherited. The U.S. didn’t fully leave the Philippines until the mid-century. It’s why they’ve been such a productive country. What the U.S. did during the U.S. - Philippines was disgusting though and even in that time, something like nearly 90% of the American public opposed the war and condemnation was essentially universal. Basically the American public both talked the talk and walked the walk in those days. Not so much anymore.

@HeichE944 Usually they’re more provocative in their language. Edit: just checked his other comments. First one is “Russia: Bad Times. Worse Times.” So, not a bot.

@istoppedcaring6209 It’s true that you can’t go move forward if you’re always thinking in a victim mentality. However, I think it’s mostly used as a wedge issue by African dictators and Islamist groups trying to justify their power or coming to power. It’s also why woke is such a destructive mindset. I’m saying this as someone who would never vote for a Republican BTW.

@carlosandleon You can’t compare Japan. Japan was not a developing country. It was a first world industrial powerhouse going into the war. Also, I wasn’t talking about WWII era. American investment in the Philippines had largely stopped because they had already agreed by that time to leave the Philippines. MacArthur didn’t have the power to enact land reform.

@djangounchained9387 lol. Like you weren’t thinking of him. The state of Mali had a lot of gold, but not a lot of tech. It wasn’t exactly a shining beacon of progress. Sure, it was much better than many European and African kingdoms of the time though. I’d rather have lived there than many of the kingdoms located in what is now Germany and Central Europe
