@crisdekker8223 if I understand your comment correctly, you're confusing the way a ship turns with the way a motorcycle turns. On a motorcycle, the rider leans into the turn to make the turn sharper than it would be just from the steering change. On a ship, the rudder swings over and the ship tries to continue travelling in the same direction it was going. This produces a "heel" in which the ship tilts toward the outside of the turn. A turn to port would conceal, not expose, the starboard hull while exposing more of the deck.

@FluidLoneknight he's said elsewhere that he thinks Algerie is the best of those 8 gun heavy cruisers.

@HumphreyHorsehead shells can be, propellant is unlikely to be usable.

There may be a lot less of that than you think. For example, out of all the US planes shot down at Midway, only two were from Japanese AA fire. The 25 mm had five major issues. The small magazine interfering with the effect give rate of fire has already been mentioned. There was too much vibration from the guns, the sights were never more than rudimentary, training and elevation rates for all mounts was too slow to keep up with current aircraft speeds, and muzzle blast also negatively affected the gun's ability to get and stay on target.

@abercrombieblovs2042 belt feeding would require a "fixed" round, with projectile and propellant physically connected in some kind of rigid casing like a small arms or light autocannon round. Even the Germans, who used a main propellant charge in a brass case for obturation so they could continue using a sliding block breech, still used an additional "fore" charge of propellant and a separate shell.

@abercrombieblovs2042 I think the answer to that is still no because of the weight involved. The belt and feed mechanism have to be sturdy enough to support the weight of the ammunition in the belt, even if you have a machinegun with an attached ammunition box and only a dozen or so rounds in the belt between the action and the ammo box. The action then has to be strong enough to pull the next round into the breech for loading. The largest fully automatic cannon I am familiar with is 57 mm; the version on French ships fed from a feed tray with loose rounds, while the Russian version used 4-round clips much like the classic 40 mm Bofors. All feed from the top so gravity can assist.
