@fusioncannon comparable to SoDak, not quite competitive with Iowa. Iowa has another 10,000 tons to play with, and only most of that went into the engines. Some more armor and slightly longer guns.

@randyjohnson805 the popular assumption is that he had a heart attack before falling overboard. Not an unusual age for a first heart attack, and at the time it wouldn't have been unusual for it to be fatal even without the falling into the ocean part.

@brucetucker4847 agreed, although the South Dakota did show the quality of its armor protection to some extent. Even the Iowa class wasn't "far better" than the North Carolinas. "10,000 tons is a high price to pay an extra six knots of speed."

By the time they got that heavy, the war was on and the treaties had lapsed. Japan was lying about the Mogani-class cruisers in the mid 30s when the treaties were still in effect.

@fyorbane the TDS on all three classes were comparable, designed for a 700 lb warhead. The SoDak and Iowa had to be reinforced because the armor tied into a torpedo bulkhead, and the armor is too hard/rigid for that to be a good idea, hence the reinforcement. Biggest problem with any of them is that the Type 93 had a warhead over 1,000 lb.
