  1. To be clear, the standard AP shell for the 38 cm guns in the Richelieu class had four slots in the base for toxic gas cartridges, with the base covered by a base cap. However, the base cap would sometimes shatter during firing, occasionally allowing the gun blast to set off the bursting charge and, in any event, contributing to the dispersion mentioned by BKJeong. Note that chlorine is a terrible war gas. Lethal concentration is around 5,000 parts per million by volume (ppmv), but it produces tears and coughing at much lower concentrations (around 5 ppmv), so it's obvious your being exposed to chlorine long before it will kill people. At that kind of concentration (5 ppmv) phosgene is already killing people.
