@hedrigeemon8324 tanks have moved toward smoothbore guns for specific reasons, needing massive muzzle velocity for kinetic energy rounds (rifling causes energy to be wasted spinning the projectile), and shaped charge rounds suffering a loss in penetration because the rotation causes the force of the blast to be dispersed slightly. Since naval guns have never used shaped charge warheads or sabot rounds, smoothbore has never been necessary. I think I would also have some questions about how stable and predictable a fin stabilized projectile would be over 40,000 yards.
