  2.  @philipallard8026  lots of training. In Retribution, Max Hastings talks a great deal about the diverse backgrounds and training for the wartime navy crews and officers. He also notes that the US Navy had something around 4 million men in uniform, but would have needed more like 5 million to crew all the ships in service or under construction.
