  2. 2nd-hand smoke is indirect & it still gives people cancer. I can, as a poor driver, cause a chain of events that might lead to an accident in which my car isn't involved. That too is an indirect influence. "Indirect" can be ambiguous at times. Such is the case with your citation. Just saying.
