  3. I own a small EV now for 5 years and can witness: the yearly cost driving it is 1/3 of the same model 1.0l ice car. That’s without maintenance and repairs, wich are cheaper for an EV so far. That’s 1/3 while charging at home, 100% electricity from the net, to get the clearest view. So that’s a given, no matter how many km you ride a year. In reality, i have solar panels and a home battery, so seen over a year, i produce 1/3 of my electricity myself. So in my case, the cost is 2/9 of the ice equivalent. More km would bring the price closer to 1/3 of course.

  4. This lobbying is good for nothing and should be criminalised. And if some independent research shows a company knows about the negative effects of it’s products/production process and does not communicate it, it should be held fully accountable. And if politicians don’t serve the people but instead become lobbyists themselves, they should be replaced.

  5. I’m driving a Seat Mii electric for 3 years now and I love it! My very first new car; all before where second hand. I made a promise to myself when I got my drivers licence at 18, that my first car would be electric. It took 27 years to find one I could afford. And they’re discontinued … absolute idiots, there at VW. So stop complaining, you only got yourself to blame.

  6. That model is named capitalism. And if you think you’re a ‘small business capitalist’, you’re a slave as well. Or become one soon. I’m a small business owner and when I look at my profit margins now and 5-10 years ago, that margin, that percentage, came down. Otherwise I would run out of orders. ‘Free market’. And where does my loss in profit go?

  10. The creativity insurance companies use to not fulfill their side of the contract is dazzling. You have to be insured, you make your payments, you do everything you can to stay out of trouble, not damage anyone’s property. And when something goes wrong and you need your insurance - you consider yourself lucky you’re insured - they find a way to get out of it and you’re on your own.

  12. Again, legacy car makers: your consumers need the option of affordable BEVs with decent quality, range and charge capability. It’s your stakeholder that want huge profits per sale and your oil lobby friends that don’t like to shift away from oil. I’m sure you remember the days profit came from sales volume, brand approval from value for money and marketing was used to let consumers know you had the solution for their problem.

  16. The problem with nuclear is that it is a base load producer. It’s not that easy to ramp up (or down) production of a typical nuclear power plant. I’m not talking about the latest developments, but those in use right now and being built right now. Combining them with a relatively non-stable producer as wind and solar is therefore problematic. Implementing (or keeping them implemented) in the mix is 2x a hindrance for renewables: money invested in nuclear doesn’t go to investments in renewables, and production from wind and solar will be actively limited at times they really could cover the need because of the inertia of the nuclear power plant. It’s easier to take the renewable one out of the mix, even if it is the cheaper one. What the aim should be is an overcapacity of renewables with a way to store the excess energy for the periods of time when it’s production doesn’t meet the demand. Batteries is an option, but probably not the best one. And surely not the only one. Think about that old boiler at home, or pumping water back up to the reservoir of a hydroelectric power plant.

  21. It’s big oil going all in to keep market share. If this application of hydrogen (for cars) survives, it will not be green hydrogen, it will come from fossil fuels. And even more then we consume now. Genius idea for them! Disastrous for the world … but who cares?

  23. I’m sure they planned to skip the costly research and development phase to jump in the nicely warmed pool and bring cheaper but slightly outdated EVs to market. It’s a strategy. And die hard petrol heads love it, because (so far) these are car brands that didn’t fall for ‘myth of global warming.’

  24. We’ll see. I fear, as long as they can get away with it, they will keep prices (ridiculously) high. Profit seems to be number one. The higher, the better, no matter what. Btw: you seen the EU wanting to look into Chinese car makers and government to make out if they’re not trying to disrupt the European market with their low priced electric cars. They should better check if European car makers didn’t secretly agree to keep their prices high.

  27. You probably can’t extinguish the burning EV, but you can prevent the fire from spreading by cooling the surroundings … with water. A well trained crew should be able to respond correctly and keep the fire in control. Second: a shipping company should know what’s on board and should do the risk assessment before even loading the ship. So I think this is a case of insurance companies trying to hold each other responsible mixed with a bit of anti EV propaganda.

EU elections are done, the right has won, VW announced 1/3 of the budget for r&d on EVs will be redirected towards ICE, EU announced import taxes up to 38% on Chinese EVs, Germany announced it’s going all in on carbon capture and storage, the ban on sales of new ICE vehicles by 2035 will be debated again, … they’re going full US republican on us. It is NOT going in the right direction, Sam. NOT!

  36. It’s Big Oil pushing hydrogen in the spotlight to take away attention from - and put a break on - real green solutions. And here in Europe with success. The ‘genius’ idea: Big Oil will make hydrogen from fossils to get it started with the promise of going green as soon as possible… And sadly Europe is buying it.

  38. I don’t think that’s the whole truth . Western car makers want their profit margins on EVs as high as on ICE cars. And that results in their EVs being twice the price of a comparable ICE car. There’s nothing more to say about that. They just can’t pull it off, so they need a way to distract the minds of their consumers. With the promise of a hydrogen future, carbon capture, a revival of nuclear power, … and even more vicious the trade war with China, a war in Ukraine, a genocide in the Middle East, in central Africa, a nuclear threat, a lunatic for president again, a migration problem in Europe, …

  39. Here in Belgium roads are getting better: smooth surface, low rolling noise but gripping, bumps smoothed, rainwater evacuated faster, even bends widened. Cycling lanes detached, lightning updated, signalisation, … you name it. It’s still too much designed for king car, but there’s progress for cyclists. And cars are getting better too (and bigger): more fuel efficient, more EV, safer for passengers but also for pedestrians and cyclists, … and more high performance then ever before. So now it is possible to drive your car safely and efficiently at the allowed speed … speed limiters pop up everywhere. EVERYWHERE!

  46. You think it’s one on one? I think at trip in an EV car replaces a trip in an ICE car here in Europe. A trip on an electric 2-wheeler replaces mostly a trip on a 2-wheeler. So also trips on a pedal powered bicycle.

  47. Maybe some science is needed here. Refining crude oil and fossil products in general, means the manipulation of it to sort it and break down the most complex molecules. A refinery produces that way an assortment of oil based products like methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, … all combinations of Carbon (C) and Hydrogen (H). Mixing these fractions back together in defined quantities makes diesel, petrol, aviation fuel, … burn it and you release the energy it is holding. Using it as intended, and your car gets pushed down the road, your house gets heated, … This means you add Oxigen (O) from the air, the C breaks loose from the H and both recombine with the O. H2O is great, CO2 not so much.

State owned critical industries like electricity and drinkable water production and distribution, sewage, waste collection, … maybe the internet, … It should not be the case in any of these public service industries profits interfere with safety, accessibility and/or environment.   49. Heath pumps are the answer to that problem. The better new EVs use them to keep the battery (and cabin) in optimal operation conditions. They use far less energy to do the job thus only drain the battery a few percents.

  57. I think here in Belgium to overly big majority of those 50.000 € and more European cars, are sold to companies as extra legal benefit for their higher ranked employees. Meanwhile, those same car brands agressively promote their hybrid cars: ‘a hybrid for the price of a petrol car.’ Even one saying their hybrid is cheaper to run than an electric. Should be illegal! Hybrids, bio fuels, hydrogen , … all holy grailed by big oil an big automobile to keep their production high and their profits even higher. But China is to blame. I’ve learned by now: when they point in one direction, look the oposit way and whose finger it is.
