The superiority of the "free market" is entirely based on theoretical conditions presumed to exist in the classical economic models of figures like Adam Smith and Ricardo. The models only work under conditions of perfect competition described by Smith in "The Wealth of Nations." Complete knowledge of all market participants as well as a large number of competing sellers, are absolutely necessary for the market to be "free." It should be obvious to everyone that such conditions have never existed and that regulation to prevent harm to the economically disadvantaged consumer is necessary.
