Why was Hiei's armor able to mostly keep out San Francisco's shells at Friday the 13th? Navweaps's armor-penetration data for the 8"/55 gun used on the American treaty heavy cruisers indicates that San Francisco's main-battery fire would've been able to penetrate the 8-inch-maximum belt armor of a Kongo - class battlecruiser at up to 12,400 yards, so, at the hundreds-or-even-tens-of-yards ranges at which San Francisco was engaging Hiei, its shells should've been able to essentially ignore the battlecruiser's armor completely; instead, San Francisco was unable to penetrate Hiei's main armor belt at all, only managing to tear up the Japanese ship's superstructure and land the single penetrating hit aft of the citadel that flooded out Hiei's steering gear and left the larger ship unmaneuverable. So why did Hiei's armor belt overperform so spectacularly against San Francisco?

@Rdeboer Yes; Germany in WWI designed and built the Deutschland class of big cargo subs for exactly this purpose.
