Supposedly, the Españas' en-echelon wing turrets were capable of cross-deck firing in wartime. However, looking at diagrams of the Españas' layout, there doesn't appear to be any way the wing turrets could've trained to a position where they could fire cross-deck without running the gun barrels into either the funnel or one of the masts; even elevating the guns doesn't look like it would've allowed them to clear the funnel or masts without elevating them well above the Españas' actual maximum gun elevation. Am I missing something here?

Ideally, you'd want a sheet of a material that's both extremely hard and extremely tough, which would allow you to do away completely with the thick, soft, heavy backing layer. Unfortunately, materials that combine extreme hardness with extreme toughness are about as elusive as honest corporate executives.
