@pamelawing5747 this past summer, between the heat and smoke, just did it for me. I don't have AC in my apartment, and even with four fans/coolers, I was miserable. I am planning to be in Washington by next summer! I love my job and there are many amazing people here but the cost of living combined with heat is just too much.
5
@montavio the expansion of the 580 has helped with traffic flow, but the cost of living here, the heat, and the traffic are making Reno less and less desirable. Tons of apartment mega-complexes are going up (INOVA, for example) but at market price, not everyone can afford them.

I'm living in Reno, after many years in the Tahoe/Truckee area. Personally, it's not for me but the people (especially at work) I've met are super nice, and great hiking and skiing isn't too far away. But Reno has become more expensive than it should be, and crime is on the rise. My biggest knock is that it's too dry, hot and sunny most of the year. Moving back to Washington as soon as I get the right job offer.
4
Ditto for Reno. I moved here from Tahoe, where it had become impossible to enjoy my previous lifestyle. When you have to wait for 30-60 minutes for a shuttle to your favorite ski lift on a Wednesday afternoon when you had been able to park practically next to that lift a few years previous, that is a huge quality of life issue! I was hopeful that Reno would be more affordable and less crowded...to an extent, it is. But property crime and the cost of living are going up up up!
4
I want to get out by this summer. I'm in Reno and my very tiny apartment costs roughly half my take-home pay, and doesn't even have A/C, which is essential at least 4-5 months out of the year.
4
But you can't downhill ski there! Lol...I have a one-track mind...I have to be near skiing!
3
I agree. I live near Virginia Lake, off Lakeside, and have all packages delivered to my work address to avoid theft. While I was sick with covid, someone stole a bag of groceries right off my front step! Fortunately, Raley's replaced the bag at no extra cost!
3
Virginia City? Has she ever checked out Squeek Steele at the Bucket of Blood? She a fabulous piano player and, if I recall, holds the Guinness Record for knowing over 1,000 songs by heart. She plays occasionally at the senior residential community where I help coordinate activities. Suggest to your sis to check Squeek out, if she already hasn't!

Have to laugh because Reno rarely gets that cold...it was 21 a couple of mornings ago. I walk to work and just threw on an extra layer...it was very pleasant. If you go up to Mt. Rose, yes it is at least 10 degrees colder, but chances are you will be skiing or snow-shoeing and working up a sweat. My knock is that it's too darn hot from May until late October.
3
Wasn't that snowfall lovely? And you can drive right up Spooner and be at the lake!

Bears are part of our population up here. In Tahoe, I used to see them around my house, on the deck, etc. Most won't bother you, though they are becoming more brazen around humans. Our residents enjoy the rail museum...maybe they'll see a bear next time they go! Several years ago, I was at Kirkwood, helping with fitness testing on ski instructors, patrollers and mountain safety workers. I was looking for the room and accidentally walked up on a small, possibly teenage bear...I don't know which one of us was more shocked! He took off like a bat outta hell! Didn't know I was so scary...lol!
3
The smoke gets bad in Tahoe as well.
3
My only knocks are that Reno is becoming too expensive for those of us who aren't in high-paying fields (I left a high-pay but stressful job to work a job I love...but it doesn't match the cost of living here), property crime and theft are rising, and it's too hot and sunny from May-October....I moved from Tahoe...and it's even getting too hot there as well.
3
@miamivicefanatic9736 yep!
2
@pamelawing5747 I think I accidentally deleted my response but just wanted to say that I agree with you wholeheartedly. People move here and complain about the mustangs, bears, deer...why did they move here in the first place?
2
@alabamaal225 well I'll be!! I'm just used to skiing at 9,000' at places like Sugar Bowl, Heavenly, Palisades, Kirkwood...it never occurred to me that Alabama would have a ski area. How cold does it get?
2
@alabamaal225 wow, I am blown away but sure appreciate the info! I'll check it out. Thank you!!
2
Every time I drive to Sacramento, I find myself feeling grateful to live in Reno!
2
@cherylkosmerl3668 Genoa is also a cool little Nevada town.
2
@russellbarnes7728 we have musicians who perform for our residents at Five Star Premier Residences of Reno. One of their favorites, besides Squeek Steele is Colin Ross. Have you heard of him?
2
I lived in Tahoe for years. Loved the outdoor recreation. When it seemed that half of Silicon Valley moved there, the whole vibe changed...and not for the better.
2
@rhondas3017 Squeek? She knows so many songs....she's wonderful. She's going to play for our residents next month, unless there's a blizzard that day. I just love her! I recall commuting from South Tahoe to Carnelian Bay for my previous job. Every year, the smoke from the fires was so awful that the air quality was terrible. It has affected us here in Reno in as well. I love to play outdoors, but the last several years it has been just too hard to breathe! The traffic in Sacramento is way worse...I go down there twice a month to help out my mom and sis...the traffic is obnoxious and the drivers are cuckoo! Running red lights, speeding on major boulevards, and using other cars as a slalom course has become the norm...I always feel a sense of relief when I cross the border back into Nevada!
2
@cherylkosmerl3668 my cousin lives in Missouri. He has been there for decades and seems to like it. I love the PNW and am looking forward to moving back to Washington. I love the rain, snow, and all the water. Lack of big water is the one thing I miss in Reno...I'm unable to get to Tahoe M-F, and it's too crazy on the weekends.
2
@cherylkosmerl3668 we once had to brake for a group of wild mustangs crossing the street near Veterans Parkway...they were using the crosswalk! Hilarious!
2
Mt. Rose is open!
2
@pamelawing5747 that's awful. I'm afraid we're going to see more unfortunate interactions between animals and humans.
2
@cherylkosmerl3668 I was driving with a friend from the Curti Ranch area out to Veterans Parkway. We braked for a quartet of Mustangs crossing the road...in the crosswalk! Abbey Road equestrian style!
2
I find the winters mild after living in Tahoe for years...but I totally agree with you about the summer...ugh...it's pleasant before 8 AM and after 8 PM!
1
You have to go to the Nevada side of the lake...I used to live in Incline and Zephyr Heights...we got plenty of snow. The Nevada side of Heavenly and Mt. Rose have great skiing. My friend used to live in a gated community above The Chocolate Factory in Washoe CIty...they needed to plow their driveway in the winter. They live in Hawaii now!
1
@alpineamanda I'm not sure if homeowners have restrictions (I rent), but it has been so dry that it wouldn't surprise me. We finally got several days of rain and snow but it's back to dry and sunny. I'm not crazy about the weather here, except for late fall and winter. I love the weather in Western Washington!
1
@JohnADuerk I'm with you on that. I don't think I'd care for Houston. I am enjoying the weather this week but I hope we get more snow.
1
I got spoiled having forest service land literally out my backdoor, and a 10-minute drive to the Gunbarrel chair/tram at Heavenly's California Main Lodge. Granted, Mt. Rose and Tahoe Meadows are only about 45 minutes away, so I really can't complain!
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 I worked in Susanville for a couple of years. I vaguely recall a Levitt Lake but I didn't see any wild mustangs.
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 I was in Shingle Springs last week, which isn't far from Placerville. Smith Flat rings a bell. We had lunch at Poor Red's. That place has been around for close to forever! Driving to Tahoe via 50 can get a bit exciting at times, especially during a blizzard! Pretty drive though!
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 ugh, I hope not. I worked for Lassen County Mental Health from 2010-2012. Janesville was nice. I lived on Richmond, next to an elementary school. Very close to Hospital Lane. I was quite mystified by Honey Lake...sometimes it had water, than later that same day you couldn't tell there was a lake there!
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 isn't near Camino and Pollock Pines? Sounds very familiar.
1
@alpineamanda what part of Washington? I hate to contribute to the influx but it's getting crazy in here. I'm looking at Vancouver, Portland Angeles/Sequim and maybe the Lacey area. I love Bellingham but it's a bit far from California for when I drive down to visit family. Gig Harbor is fabulous but I think I'd need to win the lottery...multiple times...to afford it. Vancouver is in a great location though it's getting pretty hot in the summer.
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 I remember the Army Depot out in Herlong. I used to see clients at the One Stop by the high school out there. Also did home visits. Interesting area!
1
@cherylkosmerl3668 oh I remember that place! Met with a Wraparound client there!

@alpineamanda when I was in Washington last September, I actually experienced very light traffic with the exception of Thursday after work on the 3 (Bremerton to Tacoma). I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't spend most of the week crawling along on the asphalt. Reno is getting more and more crowded but the roads aren't bad...I walk to work so I don't have to deal with the traffic on the 580 and spaghetti bowl. I was on the Oregon side of the Gorge and it was beautiful. My current line of work most likely will require being in a metropolitan area. I love being close to nature but might not have access to the same opportunities. Thanks for the tip...what cities/towns would be near the Gorge? I'm thinking Washougal...
1
@richardnolan4763 I've noticed the uptick in crime. And it is so freaking hot right now, I feel as if I've stepped onto the third floor of hell!
1
@Booz2020 we have rattlers but they are more likely to turn up closer to the mountains. I have a friend who lives a few miles away by "Hole in the Wall" "trail...she gets them in her backyard. I live off Plumas between Moana and Plumb...have never seen a snake or a scorpion. When I worked for Lassen County Mental Health, we had a scorpion in the rest room when I first began working there.
1
@torylivingston8368 I saw the photos and agree!
1
@pamelawing5747 I remember!
1
@marcusfieldfield4069 fortunately, I have a small place and my bill rarely exceeds $60 in the winter.
1
@marcusfieldfield4069 I have a small wall heater and a space heater. I use the latter only while showering. I use the wall heater for a little while at night and while I'm getting ready for work around 7 AM. Most of the time, I don't use heat. It's not that cold in Reno.
1
@marcusfieldfield4069 it's a 1-bedroom. I'm used to Tahoe winters, I guess. Today felt like a pleasant Spring day.
1
@marcusfieldfield4069 not sure but I only turn it on before I shower. It's too warm otherwise. It was warm this evening. Drove home with the sunroof open.
1
@marcusfieldfield4069 I've skied Mammoth in the winter and spring...yep, the latter is more mellow. Skied there once over Valentines Day...we were skiing white-out conditions, surrounded by people from LA 😱
