I very much doubt there are tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of foreign fighters back in Ukraine given most NATO countries can’t even get that money for their own ranks but I won’t be surprised if there were some thing like a few thousands involved mostly as private contractors doing things like supply deliveries and systems maintenance and military instruction. Another thing I think could be real is the incident where allegedly the Polish fighters got into a battle with the nationalist battalion sent to corral them. 1. The story originated with Rudenko, a very serious journalist. 2. There is both textual and video evidence of Ukraine outright having troops killed for refusing to fight. 3. There is a large body of videos from various Ukrainian units protesting their conditions and mistreatment, saying they will not fight if things continue. 4. There are accounts from other foreign fighters as well as from Ukrainians taken prisoner describing the use of the national battalions as barrier troops. 5. It would fit a pattern where things Ukraine accuses Russia of doing are actually things that Ukraine has been doing itself. For example, Ukraine accused Russia of using human shields, inquiries by the United Nations and Amnesty International both revealed it was Ukraine doing that. Ukraine has accused Russia of hiding its casualty figures meanwhile Ukraine’s official casualty total has stood at 10,000 for the past several months and even one month dipped to 9000 briefly. Ukraine accused Russia of attacking civilian evacuees and mining humanitarian corridor s, but all the mining took place in corridors leading to Ukraine in Ukrainian controlled territory and there are multiple videos of Ukrainian side troops attacking humanitarian and civilian convoys. Ukraine accused Russia of massacring POWs meanwhile there’s a vast body of evidence of Ukrainian routine brutality towards Russian captures including outright massacre. And lastly Ukraine has made allegations of Russia using its special detachments from Chechnya and Wagner as barrier troops to kill anyone they find retreating or refusing to advance. When Ukraine suddenly accuses Russia of doing some thing the truth is usually it’s Ukraine doing it. All these things together make it quite likely a battle between the Poles and the nationalists happened.

But there are multiple confirmed instances of soldiers who refused to fight being summarily executed, and there’s also a video of Ukrainian soldiers who attempted to retreat being rounded up and shot by some others. Give me the sheer number of stories about the national battalions and what they do I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a formal policy about them acting as barrier troops.
