@HgHg-yp6ft Battle of Tsushima. And considering the sad state of the Russian military today (Moskva and Admiral Kuznetsov), I am thinking that a repeat of that battle would occur if Japan decided to retake the Kurils.

Indeed. If Russia collapsed, the China would try to take back outer Manchuria. And if THAT happened, I could easily see the Japanese move into Sakhalin Island as well as the Kurils.

@teacup347 The Kuril Islands ARE Japanese sovereign territory that is illegally occupied by Russia. While it may have not been tenable for them to liberate those Islands in the past 50 years, today the West would not bat an eye if Japan reasserted its sovereignty over those Islands. As for Sakhalin, if the Japanese invited the South Koreans to join them in securing that Island, things might turn out differently. By making it a joint venture between two formerly hostile nations, it would act to circumvent a number of issues. Keep in mind, the scenarios I have listed ONLY HAPPEN IF CHINA INVADES OUTER MANCHURIA. Without that precondition, only the Kuril Islands would be in contention.

@joseraulmiguens6699 Japan didn't surrender because of Russia joining the War. It was the nukes, plain and simple. Looking at the timeline, the Emperor had already prepared the surrender speech before the Russians even started moving.

@anitagorse9204 Tatarstan proves otherwise. If they could become prosperous under independence in all but name, so would Chechnya.

@spookyengie735 There are a number of nations completely surrounded by another. San Marino, and Lesotho for example. Tatarstan would effectively be like them.

@HgHg-yp6ft Russian nukes are more likely to detonate in the silo than actually launch. Ever heard of K-129? It was a nuclear ballistic sub that tried to attack Pearl Harbor in the 1960s. The missile blew up in the silo sending the ship to the bottom of the Pacific. So, your nuclear threat is meaningless at this point. Putin has already threatened the West with Nukes for sending weapons to Ukraine. They threatened to use nukes if Russia was attack and nukes were NOT launched after the attack on the Kerch Bridge.

@danielhutchinson6604 Have they now? What is your source? RT? India and China have been buying up oil at a steep discount, much lower than the cap price set by international agreement.

@joseraulmiguens6699 That they were trying to reach out to the Soviets to negotiate peace instead of the Allies showed a complete insincerity. You don't go to a neutral power to ask for terms.

Chechnya and Dagestan together could make for an Independent Islamic Republic.

@allenk6373 Russia doesn't like that Ukraine and the Baltic States are independent, so what are you complaining about? The bigger issue is the local's willingness to engage in an insurgency to achieve independence.
1
@allenk6373 That isn't an argument, that is a deflection because you don't want to debate the merits. The fact that you chose to ignore my examples of San Marino and Lesotho shows your insincerity. But I guess for someone who complains about Americans being ignorant of Alaska, you have never heard of those two countries. Pot calling the kettle black.

@FalconfromRF Funny you mention the Armenians because the Azerbaijanis are curb-stomping them. That province they have been trying to "liberate" has remained tightly under the control of Baku. Russia is MUCH larger and more spread out. The ONLY reason why China or the other Islamic Republics haven't invaded is because of the blow back if they did.
