And THAT would be their salvation, a regional Peso fixed to a stable commodity likes silver as you propose. Hell, I would convert to using it if it was backed by Silver.

Keep in mind that national banks are directly controlled by the governments that sponsor them. Often those nations simply print money until it is as worthless as the Weimar Deutschmark or the Zimbabwe banknote. Don't forget France, The Franco-German alliance is what keeps it afloat as Deutschland itself can't do it alone. if those two turn on each other, then that is the end of the EU.
