Kind of a similar thing with US Navy pilots in the Pacific. The carrier groups attached to the Akagi, Kaga, Souryuu, and Hiryuu were battle hardened fighting the Royal Navy in Southeast Asia by the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It took Coral Sea and development of tactical air combat skills such as the S-turn to pull off the victory at Midway and Santa Cruz Skies.

@eileenmcconnell8420 What encirclements? Except for the Azov plant in Mariupol, the Russians have failed to carry out any effective entrapments; the Ukrainians have managed to evacuate before they get into trouble. Because of that, the Russians are doing brute force frontal assaults under an umbrella of artillery fire; classic 1970s Soviet military doctrine, and one that is actually very easy to evade.

@eileenmcconnell8420 Generals worth their stars use the wisdom of ALL military philosophers. "War is the continuation of politics by other means," -Carl Von Clausewitz. "War cannot be avoid, merely delayed to the benefit of one side," -Clausewitz.

@thomaslacornette1282 But not at the expense of the mission. It is always a balancing game, one that many generals and colonels fail at.

He was likely quoting Sun Tzu or Carl von Clausewitz, but the point is still spot on. Too many generals try fighting the last war with what they want, not the current war with what they have.

@zjeee Agreed. The Ukraine has been a real sleeper who has exceeded the expectations of everyone. And their performance in counter-battery operations against Russia's artillery fire is wildly effective, getting the most impact for every round they fire off.

The problem with redlines is that Obama drew so many that most of America's geopolitical rivals viewed the US as a paper tiger. The Fall of Kabul to the Taliban only further reinforced that assumption. But the Ukrainians have proven once again that someone defending their homeland greatly enjoys the advantage of terrain and intimate knowledge of the home field.

@frankierayo6291 Well, word is that they have already GPS and geolocation marked numerous locations and landmarks so that when the Russians move into areas that the Ukrainians have move out of, the Ukrainians can punch in the pre-calculated coordinates for maximum simultaneous impact from multiple guns. And this is also great for counter-battery operations.

@JohnCSmith-lp1qr No, they don't. That is pure Kremlin propaganda. Most of the civilian casualties are a direct result of Russian artillery.
