I don't think Tucker Carlson is stupid, nor does he necessarily like Putin, but he knows what his core audience want to hear, and he gives it to them. After all, he runs his own media company now, and he needs to make money. People should view him more like a marketing effort for his own business. It's very similar to Alex Jones, except that the views expressed are different (of degree, at least). There's a very particular narrative being pushed, rather than an attempt to explain the news / the world. This probably happens a lot on the progressive side, too. It's just that Tucker Carlson is better at what he does than many others.

Yes, I think in his earlier days, he had extreme nationalist views. But didn't he move more to the center later on? This is not an unusual journey in politics, certainly not in European politics. Just think of Italy's Meloni, or Sweden's 'Sweden Democrats‘. Many European center-right politicians started out being quite extreme (and many on the left did, too). Perhaps this is the case with Navalny. In any case, it's a moot point. The man is dead, but even alive and free, it's unlikely he would have been allowed to run for office.
