  3.  @chadliu5005  Ah, got it. Well, since Taiwan is not a recognized country, it would be inappropriate for the president to meet with her. It would also make China very unhappy. There's no reason to make relations worse than they already is.

  4.  @chadliu5005  My impression is that most Taiwanese prefer the status quo. I agree that the US seems to be stirring the hornets nest a little bit, but it could also be a part of trying to make US' allies in the region wake up to a much more powerful China. In other words, China will soon get so powerful that the US cannot deal with them alone, but needs partners in the region to do their share. SK, Japan and the Philippines seem to be listening. (Same in Europe where I'm from). Of course most countries in East Asia don't like the idea of choosing sides, but that trend may be inevitable.

  8.  @chadliu5005  Ok, that relationship characterization sounds right to me. With respect to the US, don't forget that President Cai herself wants a stronger relationship with the US. It's not a one-way thing. Taiwan wants more weapons to defend themselves.
