Up here in Shanghai, the city has really upped the game of public toilets. Back in the 90s and 00s, public toilets were just disgusting! Hard to describe how revolting they were. But over the last 10-15 years things have really changed. Public toilets are now surprisingly clean. I say surprising because public toilets in China used to be the source of many tales and stories, and sometimes the strongest (smelling) memory people brought back from the country.

@Otter-Destruction Yeah, and that's the least of it. By the way, most public toilets in China still don't have freely available toilet paper or hand towels, because they'll get stolen immediately. Instead, there will often be a vending machine where you can buy some. (To be fair, when I went to high school, some of my classmates who lived alone would sometimes steal rolls of toilet paper from the school toilets, so this phenomenon is not unique to China)
