  1. It shouldn't so surprising. From raw rattan to finished product it goes through many steps and through many hands, all of which add cost to the finished product. Think of a loaf of bread. A US farmer grows and harvests the wheat. The wheat then has to get cleaned, husked, milled, transported, mixed, kneaded, baked and sent to the bakery counter, where shop assistants take your order. Every step has workers that need to get paid and machines that use electricity, need maintenance and eventually replacement. It all adds up to the $6-8 you pay. The farmer gets about 8 cents of that loaf.
