The abandoning of public transit and the design of life entirely around the car in the US is completely intentional. Capitalist forces in the US HATE public transit. Remember that the US used to have great public transit systems back in the first half of the 20th Century, but automobile manufacturers bought up and shut down most of those systems in a bid to force everyone to drive instead, and further lobbied the US federal government into creating the Interstate Highway system to encourage people to drive even more. Big corporations make more money if everyone drives, and they are not about to willingly give that up. You suggest better public transit, and the big corporations are only going to iron-fistedly shoot you down, shut you up, and warn you not to fuck with their profits.
