  1. I doubt any high-level Chinese military consider this "bulwark against land invasion" rationale valid in the modern day. That rationale belongs to a bygone era of slow communications and even slower deployments, and is obsolete--even to the characteristically backward military mentality. Unfortunately, popular political perception has not kept up with the times; so politicians relive the cold war antagonisms in a claim to legitimacy. It's the only game they know; but not everybody is playing anymore...
