  1. Stone masons grew to have a lot of power and influence because of the work they performed, especially for the church in its heyday. Before iron works, stone was the superior building material. As a secret "society", the masons worried the church fathers--AND the governments. Have you ever considered how truly difficult it would be to have a perfectly secret communication?! And the threat that would represent to officialdom!
