The idea that "Trump is not a popular incumbent" is...weak: the press bias certainly limits his penetration into public acceptance; but, where his popularity is manifest, it is INTENSE, dedicated. It's a trickier value-judgement than Styx's sweeping generalization implies: what's more desirable, a larger number of people who appreciate you a little bit, or a smaller number of people who are dedicated to you?! I think, regardless of the actual numbers, the dedicated group would possess greater AGENCY, and be, therefore, more desirable.
