Business acumen supplies the impulse to create/generate "problems" for which the business then provides "solutions", at a price. I was a little surprised to learn that snopes was just a middle-aged couple fact-checking on the internet. I guess, with a little rep, anybody can turn into somebody. My point is people gotta make a livin' somehow...and the ways they think of to do it can get pretty creative. SPLC probably jumped on the hate-speech bandwagon at its outset, giving it some status as an "early adopter" of sorts. But to justify its existence it has to come up with some hate to persecute. Since, as hexen says, there really isn't much out there proportionally, outfits like splc have to dig pretty deep to find anything remotely "persecutable" in order to justify their existence. BTW, politicians are usually in the same boat: they have to make laws to justify their existence. It's really all the same old game: look busy while the boss is looking.

I'm not a liberal in the modern sense, but I'd offer an explanation why "in the objective sense it's the name of the game (discrimination)": group dynamics. The group is defined by what it includes and by what it excludes--just the two sides of the same coin. The group strengthens its identity according to the rigor with which it enforces group standards. The more rigorously it defines the "other", the more strongly the sense of group identity becomes, reaching a peak in regimentation.
