  1. The purpose of Law is Social--not only maintenance of social order, but also the instigation/execution of social NORMS. In that gay marriage may be seen as proliferating the acceptability of homosexuality, it represents an impetus to social change--a violation of the status quo resulting in instability. Outside of the social context, Law (i.e. "behavior control") is irrelevant, obviously.
