  1. Koetting is a non-entity; bloviating Blavatsky is pointless; Crowley was an adventurer, and that style of experience-seeking drove his efforts at discovery (read his autobiography). He did clearly discern the dearth of vitality in the old occultism, and his attempt to rejuvenate it--the ushering in of a "new age"--was sufficiently broad in scope to succeed. I see his psychology as restrained, if not distorted, by his blind hatred of Christianity. It may have weakened him in moments of great psychic tension...which is the sort of thing that typically precipitates failure.
