But, it put it to you, Tim, that human beings, "men", naturally conceive of everything as a person, having intelligence and intention. We see ourselves everywhere, externalized in the world. "Gertrude, my car, doesn't like cold mornings..."; we become impatient with "things" that don't work, as if they have a choice--because WE have choice. We understand things according to our experience of everything else; meaning is contextually driven. Our primary experience of being is personal, so everything that is a being is a person, in the only way we understand "person", that is, as ourselves. We can only identify with something to the extent that it is like us. Failing that, we are left pondering the "unknown", scrambling to clothe it in "the known". Of course, the first clothing that we give the unknown is images of fear and danger drawn from our personal experiential memory which we treat as the absolute and incontrovertible "truth". Once the unknown is properly clothed we can begin to date, and get to know each other. 😎
