  4. This next election will be telling. If Trump runs the table and the Leftist lunatic fringe goes berserk, the party could self-destruct. At this point, I'd be happy to see it happen. It might actually be healthy for us to be a one-party state for awhile, until we get the mess we've made of our politics cleaned up and the country back on an even keel. That actually happened during the two-term presidency of James Monroe. Virtually everyone was a Democratic-Republican, as the Federalist Party had fallen apart. Monroe ran unopposed in the 1820 general election, which awarded him his second term. It was called the Era of Good Feeling. We could do with a little of that now. Maybe Trump will run unopposed in 2020, 200 years later?
