  11. I was an Army drill sergeant back in the early 2000's. I once had a couple young men come up to me and complain about a couple of other young men, claiming they were being threatening. The ones complaining were white, and I found out were both from North Dakota. The accused were both black and from South Carolina. I had watched them. They were goofballs, letting off steam, though, yes, a little unprofessional, needed to tone up their military bearing. I brought all 4 in front of me and threatened to mix pair them up black and white if they didn't find a way to work it out. I then explained to the northern kids about different walks of life, and that by reacting to these funny guys was only egging them on. I mean, sometimes I'd see these lads pull something hilarious and I had to stifle my laughter, then correct them. I appreciated their sense of humor, just sometimes it needed to be dialed back. That's a great way, though to make it through basic training.
