  1. The majority of that area has been run by Sumerians, Babylonians, Hittites, Egyptians, Romans, Mongolians, Assyrians(where it's name comes from), Ottoman Turks, French. Don't forget the Crusades in 11 & 12th centuries and how weak the Christians were against the Arab Sultans! Yes, Christians were there but in small numbers as the majority- being Arabic followed Islam. Once the French fell to the Nazi 1940 there was an agreement for France to leave Syria and it to become an independent country. Churchill had to order an attack on the French who were escorted to their barracks & eventually left. Obviously after independence on 17th April 1946 there have been coups, counter coups, fights with the Turks, agreements with Egypt, Russia etc but it took Assad's father to take control and for Syria to become a dictatorship. So the majority of time in that area the majority have been Arabic Muslims, NOT Christians
