You couldn't pay me enough to be a teacher. Nothing but respect for those true heroes.

A teacher I know told me this was likely because of the way schools assign keys. Every door has a different lock and requires different keys; and the reason for this is that if a teacher loses a key they don't have to replace all the locks. Teachers are given one key for one door. If a teacher needs to use a certain door they don't have a key for, say the door that leads out to the playground, then they prop the door open with something so they can bring their kids back in after recess. Again, this is anecdotal and I don't know for sure, but he also stated teachers do this all day, every day, everywhere. This is coming from a P.E. teacher who said everyday he props the door open so he can get back in after going out to the playground to pick up balls and hula hoops and whatnot. Apparently the district policy is one key per teacher. He also said there is no way to leave a door unlocked since keys only gain you entry, and once the door shuts it's automatically locked. So who knows what happened there. Obviously the teacher assumed the door was locking properly or she wouldn't have propped it open in the first place.

@theosalvucci8683 No. These doors, by design, are permanently locked from the outside. You can gain entry with a key but it automatically locks when the door shuts. You do not need to lock the door again after you use a key and you cannot in any way use a key to disable the door so that it remains unlocked from the outside. Inside, the door is always unlocked. It's been this way for over a decade.

The sad thing is, we know it will happen again.
