Any wing nut spinning perfectly along its longitudinal axis will not flip. Therefore, any occasional flipping must be the result of a gradual buildup of any imperfections of imbalance with regard to the longitudinal axis, and only when those imbalances have accumulated over so many rotations are they sufficient to overcome the opposing longitudinal rotations. It’s a simple matter stored energy along one access gradually building up enough inertia over so many rotations to finally overcome the inertia of the opposing axis.
