  1. Perhaps the pilots were not trying to land, but to TOGA, a go-around. Almost everything about the plane’s attitude and configuration suggest so: the plane was travelling at take-off speed, not landing speed, the flaps were down, the spoilers were retracted, the gear wasn’t down. And only one engine was working, although one engine would provide more than enough thrust for a plane nearly empty of fuel to take off again.

  2. That wall is/was actually a pedestal for the antenna array for the airport’s instrument landing system (ILS). The ILS array is typically placed at the end of most large scale commercial and military runways, but never mounted on top of a solid concrete structure in the event of an over-run. Someone obviously didn’t get the memo.
