  1. What if .... they weren’t trying to land, they were trying to make a second go-around (TOGA)? Everything about the plane’s configuration suggests a take-off, not a landing: the gear was up, the spoilers were down, the flaps were retracted. The plane’s speed was too fast for landing, but not fast enough for taking off, due to both engines off, when they mistakenly believed they still had one working engine. But that earth-covered and reinforced concrete ILS pedestal at the end of the clearway and a lack of some kind of energy absorbent over-run pavement makes all this a moot point I suppose.
