@IM02424 NATO membership ensures that smaller countries within Russia's so called "sphere of influence" can exist in peace. When you are Russia's neighbor and are not in NATO, you can get invaded (Ukraine, Georgia and the special case of Moldova and Transnistria). That's why these countries begged to join the alliance.

@IM02424 False. 1) The politicians that represented these countries lobbied very strongly to be included into the alliance. There's a lot of documentation online available for you to check. 2) Most people in these countries clearly favour NATO membership and polling data is also available for you to see. 3) A large percentage of Eastern European countries do not trust Russia because of how they were treated historically by Moscow - and there's also data for you to check out available on that matter.
