The M2 IMHO will be in service as long as cartridge firing heavy machine guns exist, never before or since has a firearm design stood the test of time so well, the only comparison would be the Vickers and maybe (if we can stretch "firearm" to include light canon) the Bofors 40mm system but it has undergone far more change than the M2 ever will. If you really need to reach out and touch someone, that guy way over there and all his mates, their vehicles and the chopper above them there is simply no substitute.
