Trump would bring the war to an end immediately, simply by refusing to continue to arm Ukraine. It is insane cowboys like Bolton who have created this tragedy. A year ago Putin would have been content with Crimea and an ostensibly independent Donbass. Now he will want Crimea and all four annexed regions. They are already represented in the Russian Parliament.

@bluecanary9417 To engage the enemy on its own territory, that's all. Russia doesn't want the bulk of Ukraine, other than to use it temporarily as a killing ground.

@bluecanary9417 It's going badly if the war going on inside Western heads is the true war. But that isn't the war being fought on the ground. If Russia wanted to take Kiev etc permanently it would have done what it is doing now in Bakhmut and did previously in Soledar and Mariupol: constant bombardment and gradual occupation, trench by trench. Instead the Russian forces rolled down the road in a column and invited the Ukrainians to come out and fight. It then poured in raw troops and antiquated armour to soak up the Ukrainians. In his peace proposals and in his essay on Ukrainian/Russian relations published in the Summer of 2021, Putin made it clear that Ukraine could join the West if it wished; but it could not take Crimea and Donbass with it. Real fighting troops, such as Wagner and the Chechens, have remained in the Donbass area and are now assaulting the northern defences installed by Ukraine in the period following the false Maidan treaties. Their success depends on how much Ukraine has left after a year of bitter attrition. The ultimate objective will be to create a new heavily fortified border, incorporating all of Donbass and some adjacent territories providing a land corridor to Crimea. This will be strongly defended until such times as Ukraine can be persuaded to accept this new reality.
