  3.  @bassbuffricky  Then why ask? No single party actually started it; it is the result of series of miscalculations by a number of players. Putin's predecessors made the mistake of allowing the new country of Ukraine to be created on the same geographical footprint as the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine - which wasn't a country at all, but a largely Russian-run unit of the Soviet Empire. This has led to anomalies which no-one has been able to fix, especially since Western companies have constantly sought to cash in on the mineral wealth of Eastern Ukraine which, by right, still belongs to the Russians who have financed it and worked it for centuries.

  5.  @bassbuffricky  These dangers are much exaggerated to make us feel better. Russia is winning on the ground, where it counts. When peace - or a truce - is reached hopefully very early in Trump's tenure, Russia should be able to overcome relatively easily most of its current economic difficulties.

  6.  @bassbuffricky  The way things are going most - if not all - of Russia's military objectives will be achieved some time early in the New Year. It is in no-one's interests for Russia to suffer a major economic collapse and it just won't happen. We can hope for peace before long. This war was totally unneccessary.

  7.  @bassbuffricky  I don't really think so. All throughout this war we have been bombarded with propaganda about Russia's inadequacies, none of which have held much water. The economic situation in Russia is far from ideal - but then again it's far from ideal anywhere much. A speedy settlement of the Ukraine question should enable Russia to overcome its present difficulties. Everyone loves a winner.

  9.  @jonathanbowen3640  These borders are only "internationally recognised" because America has ordered it so. You don't create borders by getting a bunch of people to sign a bit of paper. Borders are arrived at through a complex process of history. It isn't simple at all.

  11. He made the mistake of trusting America and the UK. He was offered a very reasonable peace deal at the very start of the war but was "persuaded" to turn it down.

The Russians were forced into taking action to prevent a re-armed and re-trained Ukrainian army from attempting to retake the breakaway states in Donbass, which remained loyal to Russia. War was well-nigh inevitable. By acting first Russia ensured the actions took place initially on Ukrainian soil, instead of on territory occupied by pro-Russian separatists.

  19.  @jonathanbowen3640  Until comparatively recently the idea that Ukraine and Russia were actually separate countries would have been quite incomprehensible to many people. Having said that, many of those in the Western parts of Ukraine are apparently keen to exchange Russian domination for American or EU domination - and why not? There are many tempting treats being wafted under their noses. Many of those to the East of the Dnieper, however, are not so keen on this transition and, once again, this is a totally acceptable viewpoint.
