  1. I don't know about talk of Ukrainians defecting - but a greater part of the armies of separatist Donetsk and Luhansk consist of former Ukrainian soldiers (and policemen!) and when Russia entered Crimea in 2014 the Ukrainian army and the navy went over to the Russians almost to a man.

  2.  @tyomies6168  I believe there are also quite substantial financial packages for dependents if a soldier is killed, as well as a pension if they are disabled.
