Meanwhile Ukraine's military strength is being bled out on the southern front, where it really matters.

This is surely a sign that Ukraine has admitted defeat in the main theatre of operations, and is merely seeking a bargaining chip in future peace negotiations.

No need to. Eastern Ukraine - which is all Russia wants - already had a large Russian population and will have an even larger one after the war - because the Ukrainians have fled.

@_alienblood It is, on the contrary, a realistic view. Ukraine is retreating on the southern front where Russia is deploying its best troops. It clearly cannot expect to turn the tide there, and so has deployed forces into Kursk, which is defended by less hardened troops and, very possibly, imported North Koreans. Depending upon the strength of its forces it has some chance of gaining territory there which it hopes to continue to retain for negotiation purposes. It shows every signs of being a last-minute gamble.

@RobertHughes-sv2mx I have never copy pasted in my life, apart from sometimes having my views knocked into shape by the Bing bot to get them past the YouTube algorithm bot.

It's not working that well since Russia did not fall into the trap of redeploying crack troops from the southern front, and instead left the defence to less elite forces and even - it is rumoured - to North Korean imports.

@neilbadger4262 I wouldn't disagree with your final sentence, but at the same time it's quite clear from all this that Ukraine has admitted it has lost Donbass, and as for Crimea......

And were all wiped out or fled during the Mongol invasions. Kursk has been predominantly Russian for at least 500 years.

@lauchlanguddy1004 It has not been part of Ukraine for centuries.

@betterdonotanswer No. It is inside Russia.

@betterdonotanswer But it is now.

@betterdonotanswer No. By Poles, Lithuanians and others to the west, by Ottoman Turks to the south - and by Russians to the east. Broadly speaking.
