This obsession with actual numbers has very little to do with a democratic system of governance. Petitions and elections should be - and are - simply ways of testing the water of public opinion. Treating the process as some sort of point-scoring game can only ever result in contention. The election simply showed that after 14 years very many people were sick to death of the Tories. The petition simply shows that very people are sick to death of Labour after 140 days.
