  4. Exactly. I'm a tradie and somewhat enjoy it. I've never been one to sit in front of a computer working all day. And I earn pretty good money in the West ($170k CAD or ~$130k USD last year) but I can't do it remotely and if I moved to SEA and got a job there - first of all I don't know if they even issue visas for that type of work and second I'd be paid in local wages. If I wanted a remote job I'd probably have to go back to school and start a new career all over again from the bottom.

  5. I had a friend who got married and had a kid in a rush with some woman he met online because he'd turned 30 and "it was time to do that". I think he was getting pressure from his traditional parents from rural Russia who did the same thing +30 years ago and didn't understand the current year dating landscape in the West is nothing like what they grew up with. Anyways she seemed nice enough before their wedding but shortly after she was nagging him, constantly criticizing, picking arguments and constantly needing to be right and prove him wrong over minor shit... and this was how she was acting in front of me and his other friends I imagine behind closed doors it was even worse lol

  9.  @ManiacalManiac  True story: I used to have some coworkers. They were a married couple that worked at the same company. Both Philipinos. They immigrated to Canada together. The wife seemed all nice and feminine and packed him lunch everyday even though she was working too. One day I was working with the guy alone and he suddenly starts venting to me - after their second kid it's become a dead bedroom marriage and he's been reduced to sneaking his ipad into the bathroom and wanking to P Hub and he wants to leave her but he thinks the divorce will be worse for his kids and he envies me for being single. I was like "damn dude I don't know what to say that sucks".

  12. The food thing is just Anglo/Germanic culture. It's more individualistic everyone orders their own stuff and pays for their own stuff. Especially if it's with coworkers or acquaintances. With immediate family or lifelong friends you might share and split the bill or one person would pay for it all. But yeah that's just how it is I don't think it's necessarily bad.

  13. But as a Canadian I agree with you - English speakers tend to put on a fake friendliness and it's hard to know where you stand with them. Especially Canadians we're really bad with the fake friendliness. Eastern Europeans I've interacted with don't fake it as much if you're a stranger they'll treat you like a stranger until you really become friends.
